New Year, Improved You

Happy 2017! It feels so weird to say that. Where did 2016 go?? Time flies when you’re having fun I guess. I first off want to thank each and everyone of you. I am blown away by the growth of my blog and I could not do it without all of my readers. It was a huge leap of faith for me to start this and now I can see why I felt led to do so. I have built so many amazing relationships with new readers and other bloggers. I am beyond blessed.

Other 2016 happenings:

– Met a guy I now consider my best friend and boyfriend. He has been one of the biggest supporters of Life is Civil and is often my photographer. Thanks Judson! (Maybe I’ll get him in front of the camera one day…)

– Gained some amazing friends and drifted apart from some amazing friends. I am so thankful for each and every one of them though and the lessons they have taught me in life. I hate how life can take people in different directions, but they are there for a reason.

-Experienced a personal relationship with God more than ever before. My heart pitter patters just writing about it. I hope to keep writing more posts this year about how we can grow in our faith together. There is truly nothing like the happiness He brings me. 

– GRADUATED COLLEGE! (That definitely deserved all caps.) Seriously, never thought that would happen. B.S. Civil Engineering. Pinch me. We did it.  Yes, we did it. Would not have happened with out God, my parents, friends, classmates, family, I could keep going on and on. 

-Started my first big girl job as a Geotechnial Engineer in my hometown. I always swore I wouldn’t come home, but here I am and I couldn’t be happier right now.  Never say never

So many other amazing things have happened in 2016, but it could take up a few posts if I kept on.  Lets’s move on to two thousand seventeen. A new year means everyone is making those dreaded resolutions that we rarely keep. We post them on social media and then a month later they are long forgotten. That is why I hate the saying “new year, new me”. It’s not the time for a new you, but it is time for an improved version of yourself. A version of you that will last and keep improving for years to come. 

I am so guilty of the resolutions, so let’s change that term to “self improvement goals”. Sound better? Great. I seriously feel like I have let my self go. I will sit and scroll through memories from previous years (thanks Facebook memories feature… *eye roll*) and it will totally change my mood. Then I realize while I may have been skinnier and had the flat tummy I so badly desire now, the person I am on the inside is 100x better now than then. I have experienced so many things in life and conquered so many goals since those pictures, so while I desire the outward appearance it really is no reason to feel down. That being said, it doesn’t mean I shouldn’t work to  get back to a healthy version of my self. In the future I want to get married, have a family, grow my career and blog, and keep living my life to the fullest. That requires me to be the best version of me!

Here are my goals and how you and I can reach them smoothly if you feel the same way.  

Self Improvement Goals

-Workout 30min 5x a week minimum

If anything working out makes you feel more energized and happy. Losing weight and toning up are just added benefits. I used to workout religiously and loved it! While I still love it, lately I have loved binging Netflix and drinking Coca Cola a lot more. If you’re anything like me though, you don’t want to fight those new year crowds at the gym. Solution: I purchased Beach Body On Demand. You can access every workout program and extras from any device, anywhere, anytime. Seriously? NO EXCUSES! 

Fitness tracking devices are also a great motivating tool. I loved my Fitbit Blaze previously, but for Christmas Judson bought me an Apple Watch. Y’all it’s so neat. Anyways,  I’ll review that another time. Any of these devices or brands are so motivating if you set a daily goal. This way you can see how close you are throughout the day. You can also challenge other friends who have the same device/app. I love to challenge Judson and beat his step goal for the day. (Hehe)

To be held even more accountable I am part of a fitness challenge group through Beach Body. I have an amazing coach, Courtney, and these girls in the group seriously become your BFF’s. -Eat healthier! 

It’s so easy to eat bad. Let’s be real, it’s also cheaper. What’s wrong with that picture? $15 for a salad, $5 for a burger. I fell into the rut of “it’s easier to just go grab something” and it was never a healthy something I would grab. Hello Chick-Fil-A waffle fries… those are possibly my one true love. Solution: PREP. PREP. PREP. This leads back to my previous comments of my challenge group. We post our daily meals and seeing others eat healthy keeps you on track. Pinterest meal plans and easy healthy dinners, it’s as simple as that. I will share my favorite recipes as I try them. It’s ok to have a cheat meal, but my whole diet has been one massive cheat meal. I use My Fitness Pal App to keep track of what I am putting into my body and what I can eat the rest of the day. Eating unhealthy also makes me skin breakout and makes me feel sluggish. Anyone else?

-Figure out work/blog/life balance

Y’all, sometimes I feel so overwhelmed. I am such a newbie to the real world and the blogging world. I have even thought of giving the latter up… then I read sweet comments and engage on Instagram with you all and remember why I am doing this! 2017 will be the year I figure out what works for me. How to juggle a million things at once. I know everyone does it, but what works for one person doesn’t necessarily for another. Stay tuned. I have my eye on a new planner to help schedule things better. Anyone else just feel more put together writing things down? Sorry Outlook, I’m old school. 

-Be Still

The overwhelming feeling comes from feeling like there are not enough hours in the day to get everything done. I miss out on moments because of social media or I won’t truly be focused in a conversation because I am stressing over something in my head. I am going to remember that God wants us to just be still and to trust in Him. He will never let us face something we cannot handle. I will be still and enjoy every moment of every situation. I will be still and embrace His presence in situations.

Recently, I posted this book (it’s amazing by the way) on Instagram and asked for other good read suggestions.  Boy, did y’all deliver. I have a note on my phone a mile long of ones to read and about seven on my nightstand. So here is to turning on Netflix less and picking up a book more. Educational ones and entertaining ones. My parents also bought me a journal Bible. I’m super excited to start that too. I joined the Sisterhood over on Soul Scripts and Jordan takes you through how to do that and you connect with some amazing women. HIGHLY recommend it.
